Chapter 11

“Where are we going, exactly?”

We’d reached the bottom of the mountain, and Oliver still hadn’t put me down. I was developing an ache in my stomach where I hung over his shoulder. This guy sure liked to show off that he could lift.

“You’ll see,” he replied. “Soberus.”

My head cleared slightly, and the buzzing from the nectar fizzled away. “You should feel the drink wearing off,” Oliver said. “The spell negates the alcohol.”

I scowled and said, “Maybe I liked how I was feeling.”

“You were making a fool of yourself. Toryn can testify,” Oliver said.

“A right class act,” Toryn piped up.

“Can you at least put me down?” I complained. “I’d like to walk.”

“Only if you behave.” Oliver slid me off his shoulder, and my feet hit the ground. I swept the hair out of my eyes and brushed off my pants.

“That was a bit over the top, don’t you think?” I asked. I followed Oliver as he left the main path and continued down another, one that was winding and twisted around trees.

“Shh,” he told me. “Pipe down. We’re almost there.”

“Almost where?” I whispered back. The dragons had abandoned us— they were too big to fit through the thin path, so they flew ahead over the canopy. Oliver took careful steps as he maneuvered around boulders and ferns that were in the path’s way. No one had walked this path in a very long time.

I was glad I was no longer drunk. No way would I’ve been able to keep my feet unless I had all my wits about me.

Eventually, the thick forest parted and led to an open clearing. I gasped with wonder as light illuminated my face. In front of us was a beautiful tree. It was an incredible weeping willow that had a curved trunk, designs of dragons growing in the bark. Beautiful round lights glowed within the tree leaves, wrapping radiating strands around the fronds of the willow. The lights moved within the tree. I realized they were hovering around the fronds in a beautiful dance. The tree sat on a sloping hill, which was covered with moss, clover, and mushrooms. A small pond trickled nearby, edged with wildflowers. A large wicker basket sat next to the tree. It was like a scene out of a novel about an enchanted forest.

Toryn and Rowena had already arrived. The tree was so huge that the two of them were able to perch in one of the willow’s massive branches.

“This place thrums with magic,” Toryn commented. “I can feel it.”

“What is this place?” I asked.

“It’s called the Naive Tree,” Oliver said. “Faeries live inside its trunk.”

“Wow.” The ground was soft as I stepped beneath the wide expanse of the magnificent tree. “Does anyone know this is here?”

“They do. They’re just afraid to come here,” Oliver said. “Riders don’t like to mess with faerie magic. The Dragon Council forbid riders to venture here long ago.”

I smiled. “There you go again. Always breaking the rules.”

“It’s a great place to relax.” Oliver dug in the wicker basket until he found a blanket and a yellow potion.
